A Day of Magic After Loss

Yesterday, Michael and I went down to Holmes County, OH to do a little leaf peepin’ in Amish Country.

It was a true escape, with no phones.

We had a full day, experiencing the simple things in life. Trees of all shapes and sizes filled with shades of crimson, brown, and gold. Enormous orange pumpkins, and ugly, odd shaped, warty gourds.

Prayer Caps, horses pulling buggies, a tiny little horse, smaller than our dog – and let me not forget – Goats on a roof.

There were huge pastries you could smell through the door, and meatloaf, mashed potatoes with homemade bread and gravy, and a new discovery: sweet potato waffle fries with syrup and salt…YUM : )

Everywhere you looked there was beauty – waiting for you to see it.

For those hours, the pain was a little less…and life came back. It was one of those days that is so good for your soul even if you tried to repeat it you could not recapture the magic.

There were several Ryan bumps throughout the day. There was a young man who had a nametag that said Ryan, and a sign for Ryan’s Landscaping.

As we walked into one of the last shops we planned to visit for the day, the song that I have been listening to get me through each day – MercyMe’s “The Hurt and the Healer”, was playing.

But, instead of crying, I couldn’t help but smile. Knowing, God was giving us this day of joy, found in the simple things, of calm, in the chaos ~ and I am so thankful for the gift of it.
